Vernon Wells Was Killed in Action July 27

Private First Class Vernon F. Wells, previously reported missing in action in France, July 27, was killed in action on that date, his mother, Mrs. Etta Wells, living five miles northwest of Joplin on Carl Junction route 2, has been informed.  He had been overseas since August 23, 1943, and landed in France June 3, two day after the beginning of the invasion.

Private Wells, with the engineer corps, was trained at Camp Polk, La., and Camp Pickett, Va., after enlisting March 13, 1941.  He was born in Webb City September 4, 1918, and had lived in this district all his life.  He attended Enterprise school, northwest of Joplin, and Carl Junction high school.  Before enlisting he was employed by the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Company.

Surviving besides his mother are three brothers, Private First Class Oscar Wells, in Italy, Seaman Second Class Paul Wells, at Camp Wallace, Tex., and Clyde Wells of Carl Junction route 2, and two grandparents, J.E. Goswick of Joplin route 2 and Mrs. Ida Goswick of Webb City.
